Fashion Buying is a career I'm very interested in and as I move forward with my degree, I hope to learn more about getting into the industry. Fashion buying is in the retail industry and the main part of the job is being responsible for selecting which items get stocked. They plan and select garments and clothing ranges that are going to be sold online and in stores. Buyers usually work closely with designers and have a lot of creative control. They manage many people below them which requires a lot of decisions to be made under pressure with small-time limits, sometimes even as 1-2 weeks to prepare garments for celebrity events. There are also elements of trend forecasting within the job as the buyer makes the final decision of which garments are put out before each season.
Skills and qualifications Needed
The fashion industry is very competitive it has become so commercialised with TV, social media, and magazines, there also online jobs available. Most buyers have got into the industry through internships then gaining good networking. Studying a degree. A fashion degree can help secure a role in the industry. Skills that someone would need to do the roles successfully are negotiation skills, numeracy skills, creative flair, communication skills, commercial awareness, organisation and planning, ability to cope under pressure.

Why I love this Career
Even though it sounds cliché I do have a passion for fashion, colours, patterns, different techniques used to assemble garments, and recyclable materials. Working with clothes all day would just be a dream. Business savviness and styling garments are what really stand out to me and make the job role so appealing. Working closely with designers during their designated sales and trade fairs would show great organisation skills and confidence in decision making would definitely be tested. Travelling to places like France, Italy, Italy, China, to see different fashion shows and observe the trending styles for the new seasons ahead. Visiting new cities and experiencing different cultures whilst being out for work is a great highlight that makes me want to pursue this career path after graduation.
